NEW YORK – Anthology Film Archives and the Paula Cooper Gallery are pleased to present Sophie Calle and Greg Shephard’s 1992 film, No Sex Last Night (Double Blind). Screenings will take place March 22nd through the 25th at Anthology Film Archives, 32 Second Avenue.
No Sex Last Night is an autobiographical account of a road trip across America made by French and American artists Sophie Calle and Greg Shephard. Equipped with video cameras, the artists recorded every moment of their journey from New York to California in Shephard’s ailing Cadillac. The trip starts with Calle’s symbolic burial of her friend Hervé (late French author Hervé Guibert, to whom the film is dedicated), continues through the deep South and culminates in a Las Vegas drive-through wedding chapel. Alternating between video and sequences of still images, voice-over and dialogue, in French and English, the film deftly weaves together the desires, fears and resentments of the artists’ complex relationship.
No Sex Last Night was shown at the Kunsthalle Wien and at the Whitney Biennale in 1993, and subsequently at the Telluride Film Festival and the New York Film Festival, among others. This is the premiere of a newly subtitled 35mm print. Concurrently with the screening of this movie is Double Game, Sophie Calle’s one-person exhibition at the Paula Cooper Gallery. Shown for the first time in the United States, Double Game examines the mutual influence between Calle and American novelist Paul Auster and includes many of Calle’s seminal works of the 80s and 90s. The exhibition will be on view through March 24, 2001.
