We are pleased to announce Simone Subal has joined Paula Cooper Gallery as Senior Director.
Simone Subal was born and raised in Vienna, Austria. After studying Art History at the University of Vienna, she interned at the Solomon Guggenheim Museum, New York which led to an internship at Paula Cooper Gallery in 1999. She permanently moved to New York in 2000 to join the team at Paula Cooper Gallery, where she worked until 2003. From 2003 to 2005 she completed the Master of Curatorial Studies at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and upon graduation became Director, from 2005 to 2010, at Peter Blum Gallery, New York, where she helped open his Chelsea location. In October 2011, she established Simone Subal Gallery in the Lower East Side, New York with the goal of fostering an inter-generational dialog of important artistic voices.
Over almost 13 years, she gave many young artists their first shows and mounted exhibitions with older artists who deserved more attention. Believing in the collaborative possibilities of the art market, Simone and Nicole Russo of Chapter NY brought Condo (founded by Vanessa Carlos in London) to New York. The gallery placed many of its artists in important museum collections such as the Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Studio Museum of Harlem, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, among many others. Simone Subal Gallery regularly participated in such art fairs as Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, and Paris + par Art Basel, as well as Frieze London and Frieze New York.
